My band BT just spent the past 2 nights at a recording studio and laid down some tracks for a few songs. We aimed for 7 but walked away with 5, so I guess that's not bad.
Recording is mostly more of a humbling experience than a "fun" one, but definitely exhausting. On each song that we tried to do, inevitably, one of us will make a mistake (or 2 or 5) so glaring that it just can't be used. So at the end, we had to do close to 15 takes on each song to get one that's good enough to use and something that we could live with... for the rest of our lives.
One of my band mates made a very interesting comment, he says that recording is a constant series of compromises. Every step of the way you have to make certain compromises. First and foremost is how much time and money you can afford to give. Then after that comes the type of studio you can get, the engineer, the equipment, and then most importantly, your ability to deliver the product... how well and how many times can you play, correctly! but keep that same level of energy. At the end, you can only hope to walk away with something that you're not ashamed of, something that you could live with... until the next recording, and hopefully by then you have improved on your abilities and find at least equal if not improved circumstances and try to make a better recording.
It was a grueling and exhausting experience, but the good news is, our little band didn't break up, no fights broke out, we didn't even call each other any names! The only tantrum was thrown by "moi", when I messed up so badly at the ending of one almost perfect take. I was just so upset with myself. But my boyz were all very supportive and encouraging, and in the end, with much difficulties and after another 10 takes or so, I was able to overdub my bad parts! Bless the miracle of modern digi tech!
