Since we were gonna spend the day with Martha and Matthew, we decided to stay another night at the lovely Rest N' Nest. Met up at Martha's and soon Matthew showed up. A little bit of a drive away and soon we were there. Festival was well on its way and just missed the parade with brass band, which consisted of a bunch of older guys sitting and playing from the back of a cart that was pulled by a truck, and went around the small circular area twice. Got some antique cars and small children dressed up in Supergirl and Spiderman outfits followed along behind, that's my kind of parade!
Here's my kinda of car:
Of course, the highlight of the festival was the infamous Ox Pull competition. Since there weren't any rule and regulation sheets, we observed and learned as we went along. It seemed there were different size and weight categories, and the rounds started with the smallest ox teams pulling the lightest weight. They added more and more concrete blocks as they went and at some point, either the ox team couldn't pull the allotted weight anymore, or the drivers announced that they were out. This went on for a good long time and eventually by the end of the day, each category produced the winning first, second, and third ox team. The last category were also the largest group with oxen so huge and tall that they made quite an impressive sight, and frightening. It was a good thing that they were all very mellow, sure wouldn't want to be in their way if they decided to charge or disobey their driver!
Here's a little clip of the ox team in action:
We bought some books at their flea market sale, a blanket, and ate some hotdogs and fries. What a wonderful festival and a slice of country fare.
Martha had to leave so Matthew took us in his pimping PT Cruiser, had a bit of a tour in the area and took Martha home. We went back to pick up our car, followed Matthew to his house, and took him out for dinner at a Greek restaurant at a nearby town.
