Down to the wire

Oh boy, only 1 more day here before we fly out on Tuesday! We're soooo not ready, in fact, NOTHING is ready! The only thing that happened and hopefully is a good thing is that a young lady named Mary will be staying at our flat while we're gone. More on that in a bit... So you might be wondering what in the world have we been doing being NOT ready!?

Classes, classes, and class... I've had classes galore lately, not only I had to finish up working with my students, I had to put in a couple of extra Mandarin classes to make sure it'll be all done before we leave too. In addition to that, it took some coordinating, but I met with Flynn once, and hopefully when I come back I can take more bass lessons from him. He's a serious player who plays what I called an "ironing board", a 7 string bass guitar. The man is a massive big black dude, so that ironing board really doesn't look so out of place on him. In fact, during our first session, we swapped basses and he let me play his while he tried mine, and mine just looked absolutely ridiculous on him! It looked almost like one of those plastic Fisher Price toy thing. All it needed were some giant colorful nobs and a couple of blinky lights. I'm sure his bass looked just as ridiculous on me, in an exactly opposite fashion.

In addition to classes, I also played 2 shows this weekend. Friday night El D opened for a band from Manila. They were bunch of young guys, but excellent players. Old school style rockabilly, some ballads, pretty sweet sounding stuff. We, however, probably played one of our worst shows yet! :P Dropped notes left and right, missed parts, even missed a complete ending, with us looking at each other like "Alright, how the hell do we get out of this one now!" It was almost funny!

Played with BT on Saturday, of course, it wasn't a complete table, just a 3 legged one without Rob. It was for the underground cd launch. We went over to get a bite to eat after our sound check, and while sitting there, my phone rang and it was Rob! Calling from MI! He called to say he really wishes he could be there, and told us good luck. What a guy, always so thoughtful. And always have such a unique way of writing some pretty kicking great songs. I sure miss that guy.

I think we did pretty well, especially since we were missing Rob. We joked that we should have made a portable pulled up banner thing-a-ma-jig as his stand in... we probably should have made one, would have been very funny... at least to us. We only did a 25 minute set, short but pretty tight, I thought.

We then went up the street to Fringe to watch DBK and VV, stayed out way too late for a Saturday night for me since I still have to mom sit today. By the end of the night A was a bit emotional... and drunk... and probably because being so drunk, we had a pretty heartfelt conversation about this is truly the end of our band. He was just too sweet, even thanked me! Thanked ME!? I totally felt overwhelmed by his expression and didn't know what to say. I feel totally the opposite. It's been he who has been putting up with me and showing me what/how to play, it's totally the other way around. BT was a good band, took us awhile, but after 3 years, we have really come a long way and worked out a tight sound. It was really a shame that it had to end, but we all knew that it was gonna come one day sooner or later... just wish it was later... A was getting a bit misty. We shared a couple of good hugs, he tried not to cry... not in front of a girl! :P While I didn't know what to do if he WERE to cry... I hope we'll still get to play together, but I have a feeling that's gonna become less and less frequent. I'm doubly sad... esp not knowing what's in the cards for El D's future.

Anyway, back to Mary. We got to meet her through a friend of a friend. My girl friend A introduced us to Lisa and Rob (another Rob) sometime ago, and Mary is the niece of Rob's, from Ireland, a Dubliner. Young and seems to be responsible... I hope... She's hoping to stay in HK for at least 6 months or even a year, looking for work, and trying to find out where are good places to work/live etc. We were gonna give up the thought on finding a tenant, but Mary just kinda popped up unexpectedly. I hope it'll work out. At least we sort of know her uncle and aunt, it shouldn't be too bad, right? Well, as long as she doesn't set the place on fire, everything can be worked out... I hope! Ha!

We still have SO much to do before we leave. This is gonna be a grand trip. 3 months on the road, living out of the back of a van. Don't know if I can heck it. Tunji has already been warned, if I can't handle it anymore, I shall run and seek the nearest Grand Hyatt! So there! :)

First stop: NYC!
